The distributor is another part of the ignition system and its job is to distribute the required spark to the spark plugs. The distributor is usually mounted on the engine and typically uses gears from the camshaft to turn the distributor. The distributor is also subject to wear and can eventually need replacement. Various parts can also be replaced on the distributor such as the distributor cap, rotor button, points, condenser, or vacuum advance diaphragm.
Again, later model cars are using onboard computers to do many of the tasks that a distributor used to do and these computer systems require less maintenance that the older distributors.
